Former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko on Sunday held a meeting with educationist Amran Musungu who is National Economic Development Party (NEDP) parliamentary aspirant for Westlands Constituency, describing him as a capable leader committed to advancing the constituency’s development agenda.
Musungu, a lecturer based in Utah, United States, paid Sonko a courtesy call during which the two discussed the challenges facing Westlands residents and the need for transformative, people-centred leadership ahead of the next General Election.
Speaking after the meeting, Sonko said Musungu had expressed his interest in contesting the Westlands parliamentary seat on the NEDP ticket, adding that the party was keen on fielding leaders with the capacity to deliver tangible results.
However, the former city boss insisted that all aspirants for the Westlands seat will be subjected to party primaries.
” The party is attracting alot of interests and we are already have multiple for various elective seats in every ward, constituency and counties. So we will have to subject everyone’s to party primaries,” Sonko said
Sonko used the occasion to reflect on the major development projects implemented in Westlands during his tenure as Nairobi Governor, saying they demonstrated his administration’s commitment to improving the lives of residents.
Among the flagship projects he highlighted was the groundbreaking of Kihumbuini Stadium, which he said formed part of his administration’s sports infrastructure agenda and was scheduled for completion after the Dandora Stadium project.
He also cited the establishment and equipping of the Kangemi Health Centre with a modern laboratory, the strengthening of tuberculosis diagnostic services through the Kangemi TB Clinic, and the transformation of the former Kangemi cemetery into the Kangemi Memorial Park, complete with recreational facilities and a children’s playground.
On infrastructure, Sonko said his administration upgraded several roads across the constituency, including Machagucha Road, Embassy Road, Kabiro Road, the Kangemi Route and Bus Terminus, Social Hall Road around the Kangemi CBD, Marenga Road towards Mountain View, Christ the King Road leading to Shangilia Children’s Centre, Mahamba Road, St. Mary’s Catholic Road, Thiong’o Road and other access roads that enhanced mobility and boosted economic activity.
He further highlighted the construction of a modern fire station along Waiyaki Way, saying it significantly improved emergency response services in Westlands. Before its establishment, residents largely depended on the fire station in Nairobi’s central business district for emergency services.
Sonko said the projects reflected the kind of development-focused leadership that Westlands deserved and expressed confidence that Musungu would build on that legacy if elected.
He wished the NEDP aspirant success in his bid, saying the party remained committed to offering leadership that prioritises service delivery, accountability and development for the people of Westlands.
