Malindi CDF might have lost close to Sh150 million during Nyangwara Obura Alfayo Nelson’s tenure as local moves head to court.
Days after it was revealed that one Nyangwara Obura Alfayo Nelson had allegedly swindled over Sh150 million from Malindi CDF under Amina Munyazi as the area Member of Parliament, the politician is now reportedly cleaning his image through well-funded opinion polls to show his masters that he has a good following.
Nyangwara Obura Alfayo Nelson and Alfayo Nelson Hope Foundation have a case before the Milimani Law Courts, Case No. E029 of 2026, where he is accused in relation to proceeds of crime. In the matter, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), the Asset Recovery Agency (ARA), and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) are listed as respondents.
The petitioner wants to compel Mr. Nyangwara to explain how he allegedly swindled over Sh150 million from the Malindi CDF, money which it is claimed he is now using to campaign in Nyali Constituency.
According to the Auditor-General’s Report for the 2023/2024 financial year, under the subject of unaccounted-for bursaries, Malindi Constituency, which has a poverty level of 53%, reportedly lost over Sh65,542,562 during that financial year alone. Awendo CDF, with a poverty level of 46%, recorded approximately Sh125,860,756 in unaccounted bursary funds.
After he was allegedly dismissed by Hon. Amina Munyazi over dubious corruption claims, it is alleged that he bribed his way into Ukambani but was later chased away before landing in Western Kenya, where he is allegedly swindling coffee farmers’ money like there is no tomorrow.
A close ally of Nyangwara Obura Alfayo Nelson claimed that in every political move in Nyali, he is using huge amounts of money and even boasted that the Milimani court case would not affect him because he would allegedly bribe every investigator who attempts to pursue the matter.
“He called the Swiss Poll and Politrack and gave them Sh100,000 each so that he can make himself relevant, but for sure he has no grassroots support. People are just eating left, right and centre. He has no humanity at all, and he is organizing criminal gangs that will cause mayhem and disrupt peace when campaigns begin,” the source alleged.
The source, who identified himself as Anold, further alleged that the opinion polls were doctored and that Nyangwara Obura Alfayo Nelson personally instructed that he must lead in every poll.
“The first position was being given Sh100,000, number two Sh80,000, then number three Sh50,000. The rest, who are very popular and have strong support on the ground, had clear instructions that they should not appear anywhere close to those polls,” Anold alleged.
A representative linked to Swiss Poll, who was allegedly collecting money, was reportedly approached by one of the aspirants requesting to be ranked number one. The representative, identified only as John (not his real name), allegedly responded that it would only be possible upon payment of Sh150,000.
“We are in business, boss. If you want to be number one, we can make it happen. It is only your money, and don’t even ask your members to vote. We know how to doctor those votes,” the representative allegedly said.
Recently, Coast Regional Police Commander Ali Nuno issued a strong warning to criminal gangs terrorising residents, stating that the full force of the law would be applied against anyone financing or sponsoring such groups.
“I want to clearly state that any individual caught, found funding or influencing criminal gangs, we will arrest and prosecute him. Politicians should keep off criminal gangs, or we will come after you,” Nuno said.
His remarks came amid growing concerns that several criminal gangs operating within the Coast region are allegedly being financed by politicians.
A few months ago, human rights lobby groups reportedly filed a formal complaint with the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) Board seeking urgent disciplinary action against Nyangwara Obura Alfayo Nelson.
In a letter addressed to the NG-CDF Chief Executive Officer, the group accused Nyangwara Obura Alfayo Nelson of gross violations of the Constitution, illegal political campaigning, and a series of serious criminal allegations which they claim undermine the integrity of public office.
The petition, signed by Convener Bradley Ouna, specifically alleges that Alfayo has been using his official position to influence the electorate in Nyali Constituency, Mombasa County.
According to the lobby group, Alfayo has been actively campaigning for personal political gain, a move they argue directly violates the public service code of conduct and Kenyan laws governing the neutrality of public officials.
Ouna stated in the letter that the officer has, on numerous occasions, used his status as an employee of the Fund to participate in political activities, warning that the group is prepared to seek legal redress should the official fail to immediately desist from such actions.
Beyond the allegations of political interference, the complaint also contains serious accusations regarding the official’s conduct within the community.
Nyangwara Obura Alfayo Nelson is accused of involvement in a wide range of alleged offences, including corruption, money laundering, and the alleged sponsorship of organised criminal elements.
Local sources in Nyali further claim that Nyangwara Obura Alfayo Nelson allegedly “bribed his way” through various offices to evade accountability for past corruption allegations, including claims that he misappropriated bursary funds from Malindi in order to finance his current political ambitions in Nyali.
