New facility becomes Kenya’s 61st Huduma Centre and second in Kirinyaga County, easing access to government services and digital opportunities
Residents of Mwea can now access a range of government services closer to home following the official commissioning of the Mwea Huduma Centre in Ngurubani.
The facility, which began operations in July, was officially commissioned by Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki during his visit to Mwea, in an event attended by Mwea MP Mary Maingi, government officials, local leaders and residents.
The new centre is expected to reduce the need for residents to travel to Kerugoya and Embu to access government services, cutting travel time and transport costs.
Speaking during the commissioning, Kindiki said government services should be readily accessible to citizens regardless of where they live.
“Government services must be accessible to the people. The establishment of the Mwea Huduma Centre brings essential services closer to residents, saving them time and the cost of travelling long distances,” Kindiki said.
The centre offers a range of services under one roof, including applications and replacement of identity documents, registration and issuance of birth and death certificates, Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) services and pension-related inquiries, among other government services.
Jitume Hub Opens Digital Opportunities
The facility also hosts a Jitume ICT Hub, expanding the centre’s role beyond traditional government services to include digital skills development.
The hub is expected to provide young people with access to training and opportunities in areas such as content creation, web design, transcription, freelancing and other digital services.
Mwea MP Mary Maingi, who has been involved in efforts to establish the facility, said its opening addresses a long-standing challenge for residents who have had to travel outside the constituency to access essential services.
“For a long time, our people have had to travel outside Mwea to access services that should be available closer to home. Today, we are seeing that change. This centre will save our people time and money while making government services more accessible,” Maingi said.
The establishment of the Mwea facility is part of efforts to decentralise public services and bring government closer to citizens at the grassroots.
The centre becomes Kenya’s 61st Huduma Centre and the second in Kirinyaga County, after the existing facility in Kerugoya.
For residents of Mwea, the facility is expected to translate into shorter journeys, lower transport costs and easier access to multiple government services from a single location.
