Nairobi County Secretary nominee Dr. Machel Waikenda has pledged to spearhead sweeping reforms within the county government, promising to streamline operations, strengthen accountability, and eliminate cartels that hinder effective service delivery.
Speaking during his vetting before the Nairobi County Assembly, Waikenda outlined an ambitious agenda aimed at improving efficiency across county departments and restoring public confidence in the county administration.
The nominee said one of his key priorities would be to establish accurate employee records and enhance coordination among county staff and senior officials to ensure seamless service delivery.
“I will ensure that I engage employees as well as Chief Officers through weekly meetings so that we can track the performance of all sectors. Work ethics and professionalism remain my top priorities in the County Public Service,” Waikenda told the vetting panel.
Waikenda also declared war on powerful cartels that he said have infiltrated county operations and continue to frustrate efforts to deliver services to Nairobi residents.
“I know there are cartels in this city whose business is to drag back service delivery, but I assure you that within my mandate I will act professionally and ensure that everything is done within the law,” he said.
He emphasized that his administration would focus on building a culture of accountability, transparency, and professionalism while fostering collaboration among county departments.
The County Secretary nominee further assured Members of the Assembly that he would work closely with all stakeholders to ensure county policies and programs are implemented efficiently and in accordance with the law.
The Committee on Selection, chaired by Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Kennedy Ng’ondi, is expected to table its report before the Assembly for debate and approval. Should the House approve his nomination, Waikenda will formally assume office as Nairobi County Secretary.
His nomination comes at a time when Nairobi County is under increasing pressure to improve service delivery, enhance revenue collection, and address long-standing governance challenges affecting residents across the city.
