Baba Dogo MCA and former Nairobi Mayor Geoffrey Majiwa has been unanimously elected as the new Chairperson of the influential Planning and Housing Committee of the Nairobi City County Assembly.

Majiwa’s election came after outgoing Chairperson Alvin Palapala dramatically withdrew from the contest at the eleventh hour and failed to appear at the election venue, paving the way for a unanimous endorsement by committee members.

The seasoned legislator will now steer the powerful committee for the remainder of the Assembly’s term ahead of the next General Election.

Speaking moments after his election, Majiwa thanked members for the confidence they had placed in him and vowed to enforce strict oversight and adherence to the law.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank Members who believed in me. I want to assure you that all is well and I shall deliver on my promises. It will be business unusual for those who do not follow the law because oversight, as stipulated under the Constitution, will be adhered to by this honourable committee,” said Majiwa.

Members who backed his candidature cited his vast experience in city governance and his deep understanding of Nairobi’s planning and development challenges.

Kayole South MCA Collins Ogenga said Majiwa’s track record and leadership credentials made him the ideal choice to head the committee.

“We are proud of him and, as a former Mayor of this great City, we believe he has the experience and skills necessary to steer the Planning Committee effectively,” Ogenga said.

Majiwa’s elevation to the helm of the Planning Committee is expected to strengthen oversight on development approvals, urban planning, housing projects and enforcement of planning regulations across Nairobi, placing one of the city’s most experienced political figures at the centre of key development decisions.
