Residents of Clay City Ward in Kasarani Constituency have been assured that the allocation of business spaces at the newly constructed Maji Mazuri Market will be conducted in a transparent and fair manner, amid growing public interest ahead of its official opening.
Speaking during an inspection of the project, Clay City MCA Mwaura Samora dismissed claims that the market had been sold to a private investor, describing the reports as false and misleading. He maintained that the facility remains a public market developed to benefit local traders and the wider community.
Samora explained that speculation surrounding the ownership of the market stemmed from misconceptions over the building’s grey exterior, noting that the colour is part of the standard design used for markets constructed under the national government’s market development programme.
“Some people are spreading propaganda that this market has been sold because of its colour. The truth is that all markets being constructed by the national government have the same grey design. This is a public market, and President William Ruto will officially commission it,” Samora said.
He added that construction of the market has reached 95 percent completion, with President William Ruto expected to officially commission the facility in the coming weeks.
The modern Maji Mazuri Market, the first of its kind in Clay City Ward, is expected to transform the area’s business landscape by providing traders with a safe, organized and hygienic trading environment. The facility is designed to accommodate about 1,500 traders, significantly expanding business opportunities while reducing congestion in informal trading areas. Local leaders say the market will stimulate economic activity, attract more customers and improve livelihoods for hundreds of families that depend on small-scale trade.
The project has also generated employment during construction, with more than 400 young people from the ward engaged in various roles. Residents welcomed the development, describing it as a major milestone made possible through collaboration between the national government and the Nairobi County Government.
In addition to the market project, Samora announced that the long-awaited tarmacking of Santon Road will commence in August, following years of complaints from residents over its poor condition.
“The contractor will begin works in August. I urge Santon Road residents to remain patient because this project will soon commence and will bring significant benefits to our community,” he said.
He said the contractor has already been identified and the road is expected to be completed within two months, a move that will improve accessibility, ease traffic movement, reduce transport costs and enhance connectivity for businesses, schools and homes in the area.
The MCA reaffirmed his commitment to delivering more development projects across Clay City Ward, saying investments in modern markets, roads and other public infrastructure are key to improving residents’ livelihoods and accelerating economic growth.
He urged residents to support ongoing development initiatives, noting that the completion of Maji Mazuri Market marks a significant step towards making Clay City a thriving commercial hub within Kasarani Constituency.
