At least 70 MCAs in Nairobi have dismissed claims of impeachement plans against Governor Johnson Sakaja.
The MCAs who held a meeting on Wednesday Afternoon under the broadbased umbrella have dismissed claims by a section of their colleagues that they have acquired the requisite signatures to meet the threshold of impeachement.
Majority leader Peter Imwatok who read the joint statement of the members dismissed the plan as a distraction from outsiders who are out to frustrate the cooperation deal signed between the national government and the county.
“As Members of the Broad-Based Government, in the spirit and guidance of Raila Amolo Odinga, we firmly reject any attempts to create unnecessary noise, interfere with the leadership of the City, or destabilize the prevailing tranquillity,”
On Tuesday,Deputy Minority Leader Waithera Chege while reading a statement on behalf of a section of MCAs pushing for the impeachment, said that the threshold for approval has been met with at least 56 MCAs,but Imwatok said that by Wednesday,at least 90 out of the 123 MCAs had confirmed support for the governor and need to allow time for the implementation of the cooperation agreement.
” We that the President for invoking the provisions of Section 6 (5) and (6) of the Urban Areas and Cities Act, 2011, to enter into a Cooperation Agreement with the Nairobi City County Government. This unprecedented and bold step will unlock development projects worth Kshs. 80 billion for the Capital City, marking a transformative moment in Nairobi’s growth and service delivery framework,”
The assembly on approved the Cooperation Agreement, giving room for the Steering Committee led by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and the Implementation Committee chaired by the Governor to begin work immediately.
“The focus must shift from political rhetoric to implementation, from division to development, and from contestation to service,” the Statement further reads.
The resolution puts to an end the impeachment reports even as President William Ruto and Governor Sakaja assured Nairobi residents of improved service delivery.
