APA Insurance has officially committed to global sustainability standards by joining the United Nations Global Compact. This milestone highlights APA’s dedication to responsible business practices and its pledge to advance the UN Global Compact’s Ten Principles on human rights, labor, the environment, and anti-corruption.
APA Insurance’s participation comes as the UN Global Compact Network Kenya (GCNK) continues to challenge the country’s insurance sector to embed sustainability at the core of its operations.
During an Insurance Sector Dialogue on Responsible Business and Sustainability convened in Nairobi, industry leaders explored how the field can better align with global goals. While participants noted that the sector has made commendable progress, a clear call to action emerged: insurers must prioritize long-term, sustainable business models. Leveraging platforms like the UN Global Compact helps companies access essential tools, resources, and networks to fast-track these practices.
Experts at the gathering emphasized that overcoming barriers—such as internal capacity gaps and a short-term focus—requires robust partnerships. For the industry to truly drive sustainable impact, regulatory frameworks must evolve in step with sustainability ambitions, and insurers need to develop innovative insurance instruments that support green growth and climate resilience.
Other encouraged initiatives include integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) considerations into underwriting and investment strategies, while promoting knowledge-sharing around emerging risks like climate-related shocks. Ultimately, participants agreed that only through decisive collaboration between insurers, governments, and civil society can the industry successfully transition beyond traditional models and secure its future.
