The Nairobi City County Assembly has approved the nomination of Dr. Machel Waikenda as the next County Secretary, paving the way for his formal appointment by Governor Johnson Sakaja.

The motion seeking approval of the nominee was moved by Majority Leader Peter Imwatok, who described Dr. Waikenda as a competent, knowledgeable, and experienced public servant capable of steering the county administration.

Imwatok told the Assembly that the nomination was based purely on merit and not political considerations, noting that Dr. Waikenda had demonstrated the qualifications and leadership qualities required for the position.

“Mr. Speaker, as a member of the Selection Committee, I wish to assure this House that Dr. Machel Waikenda is competent and highly suitable for the job. The office has been occupied by acting officers for a long time, and it was necessary to fill it substantively. I can confidently state that he meets the merit threshold required for the position,” said Imwatok.

Ngei Ward MCA Redson Otieno also supported the nomination, citing Dr. Waikenda’s exemplary performance during his tenure as Chief Officer for Mobility and Works.

According to Otieno, Dr. Waikenda has distinguished himself through diligence, responsiveness, and commitment to addressing the concerns of both leaders and residents.

“Dr. Waikenda has been extremely helpful. He is always available to take calls and assist in resolving issues whenever approached. His dedication to service delivery is evident,” Otieno said.

The Assembly’s approval marks a significant milestone in the county’s efforts to strengthen its administrative leadership. Once formally appointed by Governor Sakaja, Dr. Waikenda will assume office as County Secretary for a five-year term, becoming the head of the county public service and the secretary to the county executive committee.
