Nairobi City County has strengthened its partnership with the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to promote youth empowerment through grassroots football and intensify campaigns against alcohol and substance abuse.
The partnership follows a consultative meeting between the County Government, through the Business and Hustler Opportunities (BHO) Sub-Sector and the Liquor Department, and FKF officials drawn from Nairobi East and West branches.
The meeting was chaired by Chief Officer Ms Lydia Mathia and attended by FKF branch chairpersons, Liquor Board Vice Chairperson Ms Judith Nyangi, the Assistant Director of Liquor Programmes and the Sector Accountant.
The discussions culminated in an agreement to support grassroots football clubs through the payment of affiliation fees, paving the way for closer collaboration between the county and FKF in using sports to engage young people in productive activities.
The initiative seeks to promote youth development while discouraging alcohol and substance abuse, excessive gaming and betting among young people.
The awareness campaign will be rolled out during the upcoming FKF league season, running from October 2026 to July 2027, providing an opportunity to reach players, fans and communities with messages on the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption and substance abuse.
Through the partnership, Nairobi City County aims to use football as a platform for public education, prevention and cessation initiatives while encouraging young people to embrace healthy lifestyles and constructive recreational activities.
The collaboration underscores the county’s commitment to working with sports organisations and community stakeholders to tackle alcohol-related harm, strengthen youth participation in sports and build healthier communities across Nairobi.
By supporting grassroots football, the county hopes to create more opportunities for young people to develop their talents while promoting responsible choices and reducing exposure to alcohol and substance abuse.
