Mwea MP Mary Maingi has urged the government to invest in grassroots sports, calling for structured talent development programmes to help young people turn their sporting abilities into professional careers and sustainable livelihoods.

Speaking during the Mwea Super Cup Season 4 finals, Maingi asked the Ministry of Sports, through the Kenya Academy of Sports, to support the establishment of structured training programmes in Mwea.

She said local tournaments were helping identify promising players but needed to be backed by professional coaching, mentorship and clear pathways to higher levels of competition.

“Grassroots competitions have shown us that the talent exists. The challenge is creating a system that helps young people develop that talent and access opportunities beyond local tournaments,” said Maingi.

“We need government support to establish structured training programmes that prepare our young people for professional sports and open up opportunities for employment and economic empowerment.”

The MP also called for partnerships between the Ministry of Sports, the Kenya Academy of Sports and other stakeholders to strengthen talent identification and development at the grassroots level.

Thiba Youngsters, Mutithi Queens crowned champions

The tournament ended with Thiba Youngsters claiming the men’s title after beating Kiamanyeki FC 2-1, while Mutithi Queens were crowned women’s champions following a 1-0 victory over Kutus Queens.

The finals highlighted the role of local competitions in providing young players with opportunities to showcase their abilities and compete for honours.

Mwea East Deputy County Commissioner Fred Ayieko said organised sporting activities also contribute to young people’s mental wellness by encouraging discipline, confidence and positive social interaction.

“Sports play an important role in promoting mental wellness among our young people. Tournaments such as the Mwea Super Cup provide a sense of belonging, encourage positive social interaction and keep our youth meaningfully engaged in activities that build discipline, confidence and resilience,” said Ayieko.

Organised annually by Maingi, the Mwea Super Cup seeks to nurture local sporting talent, promote youth empowerment and strengthen community cohesion through football.

Maingi’s call for greater government investment underscores the need to connect grassroots competitions with sustained training, professional development and employment opportunities for young athletes.
