Nairobi South C MCA Abbas Khalif, a self-proclaimed diehard supporter of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, was notably absent during Tuesday’s special session at the Nairobi County Assembly dedicated to honoring the ODM leader.

The Assembly suspended normal business to eulogize Raila, who passed away on October 15, 2025, with members from both sides of the political divide paying glowing tributes to the veteran opposition figure described as “a selfless statesman and father of modern democracy in Kenya.”

However, Khalif — who has consistently portrayed himself as one of Raila’s most loyal foot soldiers within ODM — skipped the session, reportedly holding meetings with interest groups in Lang’ata Constituency. Sources indicate that the MCA is quietly preparing to challenge current MP Felix Oduor, popularly known as Jalang’o, in the 2027 General Election.

Khalif’s absence raised eyebrows among residents and political commentators, especially given his frequent claims of loyalty to Raila and previous criticism over irregular attendance at the Assembly.

“Is it that he cannot speak, or what stops him from attending such an important session to celebrate and eulogize the enigma?” posed Maxwell Ouma, a Lang’ata resident.

Loyce Mary Akumu, another resident, remarked, “For someone seeking to represent Raila’s former constituency, he must show active participation in legislative affairs, just like Baba did. Raila was never a backbencher. Abas missed because he can’t talk.”

Other ODM legislators who skipped the tribute session include Mathare MCA Oscar Lore, Eastleigh North’s Dabal Mohamed, Eastleigh South’s Nicholas Juma, Victor Omondi Ochola alias Ringo, and several nominated MCAs.

The emotional sitting saw both Majority and Minority leaders praise Raila’s lifelong struggle for democracy and social justice, noting that his legacy would continue to inspire future generations.
