Nairobi’s water utility is doubling down on technology and operational reform after confirming a leader closely tied to its digital transformation drive as its new managing director.
The Board of Directors of Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) has formally appointed Martin Nang’ole to the role, elevating him from an acting position he has held since September 2025. His confirmation signals the company’s intent to sustain momentum on modernization efforts aimed at improving efficiency, revenue collection and customer service.
Before stepping into the acting role, Nang’ole served as ICT Director, where he led the overhaul of critical systems and helped steer the utility through a period of institutional change. His tenure has been associated with efforts to digitize operations and stabilize service delivery while laying the groundwork for longer-term reforms.
Board chairperson Arnold Karanja said the appointment followed a competitive recruitment process, noting that Nang’ole’s track record in leading technology-driven change and his familiarity with the organization positioned him to guide the utility forward.
“Following a comprehensive and transparent recruitment process, the board is pleased to confirm Martin Nang’ole as managing director. His demonstrated leadership, deep institutional knowledge and success in spearheading digital transformation initiatives make him well-suited to lead the company into its next phase. We are confident in his ability to strengthen service delivery and drive sustainable growth.” Karanja said.
With his position now confirmed, Nang’ole is expected to prioritize reducing water losses, strengthening the company’s financial footing and accelerating infrastructure expansion to meet Nairobi’s growing demand. He has also pledged to deepen the use of technology across operations as part of a broader push to improve service reliability and expand access.
The leadership decision comes at a time when urban utilities are under increasing pressure to deliver efficient, customer-focused services while managing resource constraints. For NCWSC, the choice reflects a strategic bet that continuity and digital innovation will be key to meeting those challenges.
The company acknowledged the support of its shareholder, partners and customers as it enters its next phase under Nang’ole’s leadership.
