Former Mike Mbuvi Sonko has signaled a new political direction ahead of the 2027 General Election, declaring that his focus will be on nurturing young, honest and service-oriented leaders through the National Economic Development Party (NEDP).

The former Nairobi Governor has in recent months maintained that the era of political favoritism and backroom deals should come to an end, insisting that aspirants seeking the NEDP ticket will only succeed through integrity, popularity and democratic processes rather than financial influence.

His latest actions within the party appear to reinforce that position. Sonko recently suspended party activities and moved against several officials following allegations that some individuals were demanding money from aspirants and members seeking registration and party tickets.

He also warned supporters against sending money to unauthorized individuals, saying all official transactions must follow approved party channels.

The crackdown has been interpreted by political observers as an attempt to position NEDP as a party that prioritizes transparency and accountability at a time when many Kenyans have expressed concerns over commercialization of political party nominations.

Sonko has insisted that party tickets will not be sold to the highest bidder but will instead be awarded through a free, fair and democratic process that reflects the wishes of party members. He has further emphasized that all grassroots structures must operate within the party constitution and under the guidance of the national leadership.

The former governor has also embarked on an aggressive grassroots mobilization campaign aimed at expanding NEDP’s national footprint, encouraging young professionals, entrepreneurs and community leaders to join the party ahead of the 2027 elections.

Political analysts say Sonko appears determined to rebuild his political influence by presenting NEDP as an alternative platform for leaders who may feel sidelined in larger political parties.

His message has consistently revolved around empowering the youth, promoting issue-based politics and ensuring deserving candidates receive equal opportunities.

Having served as Makadara MP, Nairobi Senator and later Governor of Nairobi, Sonko remains one of Kenya’s most recognizable political figures. Despite legal and political challenges over the years, he has retained a loyal support base, largely built around his populist leadership style and philanthropic initiatives.

As the country gradually shifts attention toward the 2027 elections, Sonko’s emphasis on internal accountability and disciplinary action against rogue officials has raised the bar for transparency within his party.

Supporters argue that the move demonstrates a willingness to protect aspiring candidates from exploitation while strengthening public confidence in the NEDP nomination process.

Whether the strategy will translate into electoral success remains to be seen, but Sonko has made it clear that he wants NEDP to become a home for young, credible and honest leaders seeking to transform Kenya through accountable leadership rather than money-driven politics.
