Samuel Mugeru and Steve Ogesa have emerged victorious in the Nairobi City County staff branch elections, clinching the positions of chairperson and vice chairperson, respectively, in polls held on January 17 at City Stadium.

Mugeru secured the chairmanship after garnering 2,073 votes, while Ogesa was elected vice chairperson with 1,600 votes, defeating their closest challengers in what was described as a competitive contest.

The results signaled a strong endorsement of their leadership platforms by participating workers.

In the race for branch secretary, Calvince Okello was elected after also polling 1,600 votes, completing the top leadership team that will steer the union in the coming term.

Although Nairobi City County has an estimated workforce of about 23,000 employees, at least 1,000 workers turned up to cast their ballots. Observers noted that turnout, while modest, reflected growing interest among staff in leadership that is firmly committed to defending workers’ rights and welfare.

Key issues dominated the campaign period, with candidates focusing on delayed and irregular salaries, statutory deductions, and access to comprehensive medical cover for county employees.

Workers expressed hope that the newly elected officials would push for reforms, improved dialogue with the county administration, and stronger representation of staff concerns.

The new union leadership is expected to formally assume office in the coming days, with expectations high that they will prioritize engagement with county authorities to address long-standing labour challenges at City Hall.
