Late Assifuah Strike Rescues Gor Mahia as Police FC Blow Title Race Open

By David Ndolo

The 2025/2026 SportPesa League title race took a dramatic turn on Sunday afternoon after league leaders Gor Mahia were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by a resilient Police FC at the Nyayo National Stadium.

While K’Ogalo remains in the driving seat for their 22nd league crown, the dropped points have offered a glimmer of hope to arch-rivals AFC Leopards, who are now breathing slightly easier in second place.

Slow First Half – Gor Mahia 1-1 Kenya Police

The match kicked off with both sides showing perhaps too much respect for one another. The opening exchanges were characterized by a cagey approach, as neither team wanted to commit numbers forward and risk an early defensive blunder.

However, the “Law Enforcers” soon found their rhythm. By the 15th minute, the midfield duo of Charles Ouma and Asante Nana began to boss the engine room, unsettling Gor’s Alpha Onyango and Jackson Dwang’. The pressure told in the 20th minute when Aboud Omar went close with a stinging free kick that just cleared the crossbar.

The breakthrough came in the 22nd minute, and it wasn’t the script the Green Army had envisioned. A rare moment of hesitation in the Gor Mahia backline led to a failed clearance, allowing Brian Chonjo to pounce on the loose ball and fire Police FC into a shock lead.

Gor Mahia attempted to respond immediately, but their rhythm was off. Samuel Kapen and Shariff Musa worked hard on the flanks, but a series of misplaced passes in the final third left the fans at Nyayo grumbling. Just before the break, Ebenezer Adukwaw had a golden chance to level the scores, but his powerful header was brilliantly tipped away by Police custodian Daniel Ogembo.

A Frustrating Gor Mahia Second Half

Returning for the second half, Gor Mahia turned up the heat. Mike Kibwage saw an effort fly over the bar in the 49th minute as the record champions began to camp in the Police half. Sensing the urgency, Police keeper Daniel Ogembo was yellow-carded in the 51st minute for time-wasting as he tried to take the sting out of Gor’s momentum.

Adukwaw was again left rueing his luck in the 57th minute, failing to hit the target with a free header from an Onyona corner. As the clock ticked toward the 90th minute, it looked as though Police FC would walk away with all three points and a famous victory.

With desperation setting in, Gor Mahia’s persistence finally paid off in the 87th minute. Following a lofted cross from Onyona, Patrick Esombe showed great composure to control the ball inside a crowded box, laying it off for Ebenezer Assifuah. The striker made no mistake, smashing the ball home to send the Gor fans into a frenzy and secure a vital point.

The Road Ahead

Despite the draw, Gor Mahia remains top of the log with 65 points, currently sitting seven points clear of AFC Leopards.

While the result prevents them from going nine points clear, K’Ogalo are still just one win away from clinching the title. Their next assignment is a tricky away trip to Murang’a Seal, where they will hope to finally put the title race to bed. For now, however, the champagne remains on ice.
