As Somalia’s private sector continues to power economic recovery and business expansion, Salaam Somali Bank (SSB) is strengthening its position as a key partner for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) through innovative digital payment solutions and targeted financial inclusion programmes.

The bank’s growing digital ecosystem is helping businesses streamline operations, improve cash flow management, and expand access to financial services in a rapidly evolving economy. Through mobile and internet banking platforms, SMEs can send and receive payments instantly, process payroll, settle supplier invoices, and monitor transactions in real time, reducing dependence on cash and improving operational efficiency.

Beyond facilitating transactions, Salaam Somali Bank is combining digital innovation with access to finance and entrepreneurship development to support long-term business growth.

Since launching its women entrepreneurship initiative in 2011, the bank has disbursed more than US$7.5 million through its interest-free microfinance programme, benefiting over 6,000 borrowers across Somalia. Women account for 41 percent of beneficiaries, a participation rate that is more than four times higher than the national average for female credit applicants.

The programme, which is free to join and operates in line with the bank’s Sharia-compliant financing model, combines access to capital with business training, helping entrepreneurs build the skills required to sustain and scale their enterprises.

The impact is increasingly visible across Somalia’s SME sector. To date, Salaam Somali Bank has supported more than 2,460 women-owned businesses, primarily operating in food processing, retail, tailoring, vending, and trade. Flexible repayment structures have enabled business owners to expand operations while managing the realities of small-scale enterprise growth.

Collectively, these businesses have created more than 800 jobs, contributing to household incomes and stimulating economic activity within local communities.

Among the programme’s success stories is Fatima Ibrahim Abbas, founder of The Difference It Makes, a small trading business that struggled to expand due to limited access to financing. After receiving microfinance support and entrepreneurship training from Salaam Somali Bank, Abbas upgraded her shop, increased inventory, hired additional employees, and significantly grew her revenues.

“This support has given me the confidence and resources to grow my business and provide for my family,” she said.

Industry analysts note that the combination of digital banking infrastructure and accessible financing is becoming increasingly important as Somalia’s business environment evolves. Growing mobile phone usage, expanding internet connectivity, and widespread adoption of mobile money services have laid the foundation for broader digital transformation, enabling businesses to embrace electronic payments and formal financial services.

Somalia’s digital payment revolution has been enabled by one of Africa’s most advanced mobile money ecosystems.

According to the World Bank and industry estimates, mobile money transactions account for a significant share of day-to-day economic activity, with mobile wallets widely used for business payments, salary disbursements, remittances, and retail purchases. Internet penetration has continued to grow in recent years, reaching approximately 30–35 percent of the population, supported by expanding 4G networks and investments in fibre-optic infrastructure. Mobile penetration exceeds 70 percent, making mobile devices the primary gateway to financial services for millions of Somalis.

The country’s telecommunications sector has played a critical role in expanding digital connectivity and facilitating electronic transactions. Combined with strong remittance inflows from the Somali diaspora, estimated at more than US$1 billion annually, these developments have accelerated the adoption of digital financial services and created a favourable environment for banks such as Salaam Somali Bank to scale mobile banking, digital payments, and SME financing solutions across the country.

This growing digital ecosystem is helping formalize commerce, improve financial inclusion, and enable businesses in both urban and rural areas to participate more effectively in Somalia’s evolving economy.

At the same time, challenges remain. Cybersecurity risks, varying levels of digital literacy, and infrastructure gaps in some regions continue to present obstacles to wider adoption of digital financial services. Salaam Somali Bank says it is addressing these concerns through investments in secure banking technologies, customer education programmes, and initiatives aimed at improving digital financial literacy among entrepreneurs.

The bank’s USSD service, DEEQTOON, alongside its mobile banking platform and integration with the Salaam App ecosystem, has further expanded access to financial services for Somalis both within the country and across the diaspora. Customers can transfer funds, pay for goods and services, and manage accounts remotely, helping connect businesses and families to Somalia’s financial system regardless of location.

As digital transactions continue to gain momentum, Salaam Somali Bank’s broader support for SMEs—including business financing, trade finance, payroll solutions, and customized banking products—is positioning the institution as a strategic driver of entrepreneurship and economic development.

With financial inclusion, digital innovation, and SME empowerment at the center of its strategy, Salaam Somali Bank continues to play a critical role in unlocking business growth, job creation, and sustainable economic development across Somalia. These offerings provide businesses with the tools and capital necessary to expand operations and compete in regional markets.

As Somalia advances toward a more digitally connected economy, Salaam Somali Bank’s commitment to innovation and financial inclusion is positioning the institution as a strategic partner for SMEs seeking sustainable growth. By empowering businesses with seamless payment solutions, the bank is helping unlock new opportunities for entrepreneurship, job creation, and economic development across the country.
