Nairobi Members of County Assembly (MCAs) have called on the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to investigate Kipipiri Member of Parliament Wanjiku Muhia over remarks she allegedly made during a political meeting in Ol Kalou.

Led by Nairobi County Assembly Minority Leader Antony Kiragu of Waithaka Ward, the MCAs expressed concern that the statements could fuel ethnic tensions, particularly in cosmopolitan areas of the country.

The legislators condemned the remarks and urged the NCIC to closely monitor political rallies ahead of the upcoming Ol Kalou by-election, warning against rhetoric that could undermine national cohesion.

According to the MCAs, the MP was captured in a video addressing residents during a campaign event, where she allegedly urged locals to identify and confront individuals perceived to be non-residents in the area. They argued that such statements, if accurately reported, could be interpreted as incitement and may threaten peaceful coexistence among communities.

Kiragu claimed the remarks were aimed at creating divisions among communities and fostering a sense of exclusion.

“The intention is to radicalise the people of the mountain, to make them feel deprived and isolated when that is not the reality,” he said.

The Minority Leader called for swift action by relevant authorities, saying leaders should be held accountable for statements that could jeopardize national unity.

“The NCIC and DCI should move with speed and investigate these remarks. Such utterances have no place in our society, especially when they come from elected leaders,” Kiragu stated.

The Ol Kalou by-election is shaping up to be a closely contested race between the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Samuel Muchina and Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) candidate Sammy Ngotho.

Political observers have described the contest as a significant test of political influence in the Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The constituency is predominantly inhabited by members of the Kikuyu community but also hosts residents from diverse backgrounds, making cohesion and peaceful coexistence key issues during the campaign period.

The remarks attributed to the Kipipiri MP have attracted public attention and sparked debate among political leaders and commentators, with some calling for investigations while others have urged restraint and adherence to due process.

By the time of publication, neither the NCIC, the DCI nor MP Wanjiku Muhia had publicly responded to the calls for investigations.
