A growing number of Kenyan doctors, medical officers and health experts are publishing books that document the country’s evolving healthcare system, mental health struggles and personal experiences in the medical profession.

The publications are emerging at a time when Kenya’s health sector is facing pressure from rising patient demand, funding shortages, pandemics and ongoing reforms linked to Universal Health Coverage.

Among the latest authors is Dr. Martin Alfred Wafula Wekesa whose new book, Resilient Leadership in Turbulent Healthcare Settings: Operational Optimization, Business Continuity, and Responsive Leadership in Healthcare Facilities, focuses on crisis management and leadership within healthcare institutions.

The book draws from Dr. Wekesa’s experience in hospital administration and health systems strengthening across Africa. It explores how healthcare facilities can maintain operations during periods of uncertainty caused by financial shocks, infrastructure challenges and public health emergencies.

Recent years have also seen several other Kenyan medical professionals publish books addressing different aspects of healthcare and personal resilience.

In 2025, Dr. Ernest Omenge Nyamato released My Medical Journey Through Africa, an account of his experiences working in medicine and public health across the continent. The book highlights challenges faced in rural healthcare delivery and leadership in global health systems.

Another 2025 publication, A Child of Two Worlds by Ummuro Adan, traces the author’s journey from Northern Kenya to the United States while examining identity, resilience and cultural transition.

Kenyan healthcare experts are also contributing to broader continental discussions on digital transformation in medicine. The forthcoming 2026 publication Digitalizing Health Care Supply Chains in Africa: Achievements, Challenges and Impact features contributions from Kenyan health advocate Ogweno Stephen on the rollout of digital health systems in Africa.

Mental health has equally become a major focus in recent medical literature. In 2023, renowned psychiatrist Dr. Frank Njenga unveiled Healing the Mind at Chiromo Hospital Group, offering insight into mental wellness and psychiatric care in Kenya.

Healthcare empathy and burnout have also featured prominently in recent writings. Empathy and Compassion in Healthcare by Dr. Patricia Ngene examines the emotional pressures faced by healthcare workers and the importance of patient-centered care.

Meanwhile, veteran physician Dr. J.A. Aluoch documented the country’s healthcare evolution in Fifty Years of Health Services in Kenya (1968–2018), a publication that captures decades of reforms, resource challenges and milestones in Kenya’s medical sector.

The Ministry of Health and Kenya Medical Training College also unveiled The Journey to Greatness in 2023 alongside the KMTC Strategic Plan.

A common thread running through many of the books is the growing concern over clinician burnout, mental wellness, digital transformation and the need for resilient leadership within healthcare institutions.

Experts say the publications are helping preserve Kenya’s medical history while also offering practical lessons for future healthcare leaders navigating an increasingly complex health environment.
