In what will go down as one of the most consequential clashes in recent Kenyan football history, record SportPesa League champions Gor Mahia upset AFC Leopards 1-0 during the 99th Mashemeji Derby at a packed Nyayo National Stadium to effectively put them one hand on the 2025/2026 league crown.
A goal by Alpha Onyango in the 83rd minute was enough to separate the two sides, and Gor Mahia now lead the table on 61 points after 21 games, with AFC Leopards stuck on 55 points.
As both sides now prepare to enter the home stretch in the quest to end the season as champions, here are five things Hivisasa news picked from the clash:
5. Alpha Onyango Rises to Occasion

In a game of high stakes, it was Gor Mahia’s on-pitch captain and midfielder Alpha Onyango who delivered the killer blow.
In the 83nd minute, K’Ogalo finally breached the Ingwe defense. Onyango showed striker-like composure inside the box, controlling a cross from Byron Onyona before firing a low, precise shot into the bottom left corner.
It was a goal that proved Gor Mahia’s championship pedigree—finding a way to win even when the game looks destined for a draw.
4. A “SportPesa” Victory Over “Betika”
The derby was about so much more than two sworn rivals. It was also a clash between two big gaming brands in Kenya.
With the league currently under the SportPesa banner, who are also Gor Mahia’s main partners, the pre-match talk was heavy on who would claim bragging rights. AFC Leopards are backed by gaming rival Betika.
So when Onyango gave Gor Mahia the winner, it was a massive boost for SportPesa in terms of their publicity, compared to Betika, whose club partner Leopards lost the derby on the day.
3. Record Attendance at Derby

This was officially the best-attended Mashemeji Derby in recent history. Nyayo Stadium was a complete sell-out, with a “sea of humanity” in green and blue.
The high turnout translated to massive financial success for the hosts, AFC Leopards. Leopards announced on their social media posts that a total of 20,336 tickets were sold in Sunday’s 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐣𝐢 𝐃𝐞𝐫𝐛𝐲 at Nyayo Stadium on Saturday. However, multiple reports online have claimed that the number of fans that attended the clash were much more than that,
Hivisasa news also understands that Leopards generated up to 7.3 million in matchday revenue. Regardless of the reports, there is no doubt that the Mashemeji Derby feverpitch hit higher than ever before.

4. Post Match Chaos at Mashemeji Derby
The match ended on a sour note as the high-octane atmosphere boiled over into the technical area.
Immediately after the final whistle, a section of the AFC Leopards’ technical bench and a few agitated fans attempted to attack the center referee.
They were protesting a 77th-minute incident where they felt a penalty should have been awarded for an alleged handball by Frank Odhiambo.
The anger in the Leopards camp was clearly echoed by chairman Bonface Ambani, who took to Facebook to blast Football Kenya Federation’s lack of “substance” in holding referees accountable. Ambani claimed Kenyan match officials had been turned into “match fixers” . .
“FKF, your only job is fighting over the money coming into the federation from FIFA, CAF, the Government, etc. You are doing nothing else of substance to improve the levels of officiating and football in this country,” Ambani said.
“That is the only thing you are good at… You will call for meetings with all the branches nationwide and spend millions on them, but you will never fix the ‘big monster’ in our football: Poor officiating.”
5. Akonnor’s Tactical Masterstroke
Tactically, Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor won the battle in the second half through a decisive double substitution to end his counterpart Fred Ambani’s impressive individual unbeaten run in Mashemeji Derbies.
After a cagey first half where AFC Leopards’ double pivot of Musa Oundo and Boniface Munyendo dominated the middle, Akonnor introduced Lawrence Juma and took off Jackson Dwang as he sought to add more control.
This shift allowed Gor Mahia to stop playing long balls and start dictating the tempo through short, sharp passing. This tactical “reset” exhausted the Ingwe midfield and eventually created the space for Bryton Onyona to overlap and provide the assist for the winning goal.
What Next For Both Mashemeji Derby Rivals?
With only five matches remaining in the season, Gor Mahia (61 points) now has a massive psychological and mathematical advantage over AFC Leopards (55 points). K’Ogalo’s pursuit of an unprecedented 22nd league title now looks like a “when,” not an “if.”
Gor Mahia patron Eliud Owalo had promised them a one million shilling bonus for the win. On Monday morning, the club announced he had invited them to a luncheon and rewarded them the incentive at Nairobi’s Carnivore Resort. This will further give them the motivation to go for the kill and lift their 22nd title.
