The Water Resources Authority (WRA) has unveiled a customer mobile application aimed at transforming water governance through technology-driven solutions.

The platform, known as the WRA Customer Mobile Application, is designed to streamline service delivery by enabling users to apply for water permits, make payments, and meet regulatory requirements directly from their mobile phones. The move marks a significant shift from manual processes to a more efficient, digital-first system.

Speaking during the launch, WRA Chief Executive Officer Mohammed Shurie described the app as a milestone in modern water resource management. He said the platform is tailored to benefit vendors, water users, and the authority by enhancing transparency and accountability.

“This is a game-changer in water regulation. Our goal is to improve efficiency in water management and eliminate wastage. The mobile application is significantly more effective than the manual system we have relied on in the past,” said Shurie.

One of the key features of the app is its ability to allow water abstractors to monitor their water usage in real time. This capability is expected to enhance compliance and promote responsible utilization of water resources, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and real estate development.

Shurie revealed that the Authority has also invested in telemetry water monitoring stations that will continuously collect real-time data on river flows and groundwater levels across the country. The data will be integrated into the system to provide accurate and up-to-date information on water availability and abstraction trends.

In addition, the Authority is rolling out an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system to improve the tracking of water abstraction. The AMI technology will ensure precise measurement of water usage, helping curb illegal abstraction and reduce losses.

The mobile application is currently available for download on the Google Play Store. Users are required to download and install the app on their smartphones before registering their details.

During registration, customers must provide essential information including their meter number, full names, and other relevant data to activate their accounts and access services.

Shurie emphasized that the Authority is keen on embracing emerging technologies to strengthen oversight of Kenya’s water resources.

“As a regulator, we are working to ensure that we conserve all our water resources effectively. In this era of Artificial Intelligence and rapid technological advancement, we want to remain at par with emerging technologies and global best practices,” he said.

The launch of the app comes at a time when pressure on water resources continues to grow due to population increase, climate change, and expanding economic activities. By digitizing its services and enhancing monitoring systems, WRA hopes to promote sustainable water use while improving convenience for its customers.

The Authority believes that the integration of digital platforms, real-time monitoring, and advanced metering systems will not only improve compliance but also strengthen data-driven decision-making in the water sector.

With the new application now operational, WRA is positioning itself as a forward-looking regulator committed to innovation, transparency, and sustainable water resource management in Kenya.
