Kenya’s political fraternity has been thrown into mourning following the death of Nominated Member of Parliament Denar Joseph Hamisi, who passed away early Saturday morning.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula broke the news in a solemn announcement, confirming that the MP died at approximately 7:00 am on December 6.
“The House has lost a colleague, a patriot and a quiet but impactful legislator,” Wetang’ula said, expressing condolences to Parliament staff, MPs and the grieving family.
Hamisi, who joined the National Assembly after the 2022 General Election on an ANC Party nomination, had steadily built a reputation as a calm, measured and hardworking member. At the time of his passing, he served in two committees Sports and Culture, and the Select Committee on National Cohesion and Equal Opportunities.
Born in 1969 in Kinango, Kwale County, Hamisi’s journey into public leadership began long before his entry into Parliament.
He studied at Mombasa Baptist High School before joining United States International University (USIU), where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management. He later advanced academically, obtaining a Master’s in International Business Administration and later, a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi.
His career spanned several state institutions, including the Electoral Commission of Kenya, Kenya Airports Authority and Coast Development Authority. He also held leadership roles at the Kenya National Accreditation Services and served on governing councils of both Moi University and the University of Nairobi.
Colleagues described Hamisi as soft-spoken, principled, and deeply committed to equality and national unity.
“He carried himself with humility and purpose,” Wetang’ula noted. “His contributions may not have always made headlines, but they shaped conversations and policy direction quietly and effectively.”
A Parliamentary committee led by Deputy Majority Leader Owen Baya Yaa has been appointed to work with the family and coordinate burial plans. Official updates will be communicated once arrangements are finalized.
Hamisi leaves behind a legacy defined by service, intellect and calm leadership a rare blend that earned him respect across the political divide.
