The has commended the for a significant turnaround in its financial performance, following the utility’s improved audit rating and a record revenue collection of Sh12.6 billion in the last financial year.

The praise came during an appearance by , the Governor of , before the . The session, chaired by , focused on the county government’s financial management and accountability measures.

Governor Sakaja was accompanied by the Nairobi County Chief Officer for Water, Oscar Omoke, and Acting Managing Director of Nairobi Water, Martin Nang’ole, highlighting the leadership team overseeing reforms in the capital’s water utility.

During the session, the governor outlined a series of reforms implemented by his administration aimed at strengthening governance and improving operational efficiency within the water company. These measures included tighter financial controls, improved revenue collection systems, and enhanced transparency in the management of public resources.

“These results demonstrate the reforms we have introduced to strengthen accountability and efficiency in service delivery. We are committed to ensuring that public resources are managed transparently while improving water services for Nairobi residents,” Sakaja told the committee.

According to county officials, the reforms have not only improved financial performance but also enhanced service delivery, positioning the water utility as one of the best-performing public service agencies within the county government.

Members of the Senate committee acknowledged the progress made and pledged to support the county government in addressing challenges affecting the water utility, including intervening with national government agencies to facilitate the settlement of hundreds of millions of shillings in outstanding water bills owed to the county.

The development marks a major milestone for Nairobi’s water sector, which has previously faced criticism over inefficiencies, financial mismanagement, and service delivery challenges.

Observers say the improved audit rating and record revenue collection signal growing accountability and stronger institutional management at Nairobi Water, raising hopes for better water services for residents across the capital.
