Kilimani Member of County Assembly (MCA) Moses Ogeto has openly thrown his weight behind Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, deepening the growing rift within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) following Sifuna’s removal as the party’s Secretary General.
Ogeto, alongside nominated MCA Perpetua Mponjiwa, on Thursday signaled a clear shift in allegiance in what insiders describe as an intensifying struggle for control within the party.
The two MCAs’ stance is already threatening to spill further into the Nairobi County Assembly, where reports indicate that the ODM divisions could soon trigger leadership changes as rival factions seek to consolidate influence.
Sifuna was removed from the powerful Secretary General position after a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Mombasa, in a decision that has sparked debate among party loyalists and leaders.
According to the NEC, the decision was informed by what it termed “grave concern” over rising levels of indiscipline within the party, especially among senior officials.
The fallout from the decision has continued to reverberate across ODM ranks, with allies of Sifuna portraying his removal as politically motivated, while party hardliners insist the action was necessary to restore discipline and protect party unity.
Political observers say the public defiance by elected leaders such as Ogeto could complicate ODM’s internal cohesion, particularly in Nairobi where Sifuna commands strong influence and is seen as a key mobiliser for the party’s urban base.
As the standoff escalates, attention is now shifting to the Nairobi County Assembly, where the ODM infighting could reshape alliances and leadership positions in the coming days.
