A Cameroonian national accused of orchestrating a gold scam involving millions of shillings has been arraigned in a Nairobi court and denied the charges.

Fabanou Wassou Joseph De-Dieu, also known as Joseph Kabongo Malika, appeared before Milimani Magistrate Terresiah Nyangina on Monday, where he pleaded not guilty to two counts, including obtaining money by false pretenses.

The court released the accused on a bond of KSh 500,000 or an alternative cash bail of KSh 100,000, and directed him to deposit his passport in court pending the hearing and determination of the case.

According to the charge sheet, the alleged offence occurred between May 1, 2024, and August 9, 2024, in Kileleshwa, Nairobi. Prosecutors claim that Fabanou, jointly with others not before the court, conspired to defraud Hayet Amri of USD 26,000 (approximately KSh 3,336,000).

It is alleged that the accused falsely represented that he was in a position to sell 20 kilograms of gold, a claim the prosecution says he knew to be untrue.

In the second count, Fabanou faces charges related to proceeds of crime, adding to his legal troubles. The court heard that he had recently been acquitted in a separate case also linked to a gold scam.

The case is scheduled for mention on March 31, 2026, for pre-trial directions.
