New photos show remarkable transformation of baby james one year after adoption by mike sonko
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has shared new photos of Baby James, revealing a remarkable transformation since the child’s official adoption in January 2025.

The images, posted recently, show James looking healthy, happy, and noticeably grown — a sharp contrast to the difficult circumstances that first brought his story to public attention.

James was orphaned after his father, Michael Omworo Ombui, a construction worker and single parent, was fatally stabbed by thugs in Mathare Area 4 while escorting the child to school. The tragic incident sparked public outrage and sympathy, highlighting the vulnerability faced by many families in informal settlements.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, Sonko stepped in to take responsibility for the child. He covered Ombui’s burial expenses and later adopted James, committing to provide him with a stable and nurturing home. Recognizing the emotional toll of the ordeal, Sonko also facilitated professional trauma therapy for the boy at Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital.

According to Sonko, the child has made steady progress both physically and emotionally. The latest photos reflect a child who is thriving, an indication that consistent care, medical attention, and emotional support have played a crucial role in his recovery and overall wellbeing.

The update has drawn positive reactions online, with many Kenyans praising the continued support extended to the child and noting the importance of long-term care for children affected by violence and loss.

Baby James’ journey, from tragedy to healing, continues to resonate as a powerful reminder of the impact of compassion, responsibility, and sustained support in changing a child’s life.
