Kenya Railways is moving forward with plans to establish and unveil the Railway Training Institute (RTI) Mombasa Campus, following a high-level consultative meeting held in Mombasa on Friday, January 23, 2026.

The meeting was chaired by Principal Secretary Mr. Mohammed Daghar, CBS, and brought together key stakeholders including Mvita Member of Parliament Hon. Mohammed Soud Machele, Mombasa Senator Hon. Mohammed Faki, Kenya Railways Managing Director Mr. Philip Mainga, EBS, as well as officials from the Little Theatre Club.

Discussions centred on the strategic planning of the proposed campus and its broader role in skills development, with particular emphasis on how the facility can support both railway sector capacity building and the creative industry.

Stakeholders explored ways of accommodating creatives within the campus while ensuring the project aligns with national development priorities and the interests of the local community.

The consultative forum resolved to establish a joint committee that will spearhead further stakeholder engagement, guide the planning process, and develop proposals on the optimal use of the facility.

The Railway Training Institute has been designated as a Centre of Excellence for capacity building in the railway sector for Kenya and the wider region. It is a recognized Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institution currently offering Higher Diploma, Diploma, and Certificate courses at its Nairobi (Main) and Kisumu campuses.

Once operational, the Mombasa Campus is expected to strengthen technical skills development, support regional railway operations, and contribute to socio-economic growth at the Coast.
