Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko will be seeking a full review of his case as he plots a major political comeback for the 2027 election.
Sonko said this on Tuesday morning when he successfully registered a new political party, the National Economic Development Party (NEDP).
His comeback might face legal battles, but he remains optimistic that a full review of the impeachment is possible.
He was impeached by Nairobi MCAs in December 2020, a move that was largely seen as political after falling out with senior governorment officials in the Jubilee regime under former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
He is now set to return to the Supreme Court to challenge the decision.
The Supreme court had upheld the impeachement as determined by both the High Court and the Court of Appeal.
The former governor believes new evidence gives him fresh grounds for a review.
He cited the East African Court of Justice (EACJ) ruling, which declared that his impeachment was illegal, as well as sworn affidavits he claims to have received from MCAs who allegedly confessed they were pressured by powerful government figures to vote him out.
“I have affidavits from some of the leaders disowning the impeachment. This is the new evidence I intend to file in court,” Sonko said outside the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties at Lion Place. “Article 193 of the Constitution provides that you can only be locked out if you have exhausted all appeals or reviews. I have a strong case for review, and once filed, I will be eligible to contest.”
He accused the Supreme Court of ending his political career “in just 24 hours,” but insisted the fight is not over.
At the same event, Sonko unveiled the leadership structure of NEDP, saying the party will prioritise young leaders and fresh political voices across the country. He is listed as the party leader, with former SONU chairman Anthony Manyara and KEMU University student leader Naomi Chebet Masai as deputy party leaders.
Other officials include John Nyamu (Chairman), Ben Mulwa (Secretary General), Eric Njoroge (Deputy SG), Francis Wambua (Treasurer), Laura Mwende (Deputy Treasurer), Peterson Maina (National Organising Secretary) and Joseph Kiangoi (Deputy Organising Secretary).
“This is not about Sonko but ordinary Kenyans,” he said. “We are building a movement that breaks away from old political patterns.”
Masai said the party aims to give young people a genuine voice: “As youths, we will no longer sit waiting at the dining table — we will be the ones preparing the menu.”
The party will be formally launched at a later date.
