Harry Kappa will represent Kenya at the Red Bull Wings Cup global finals in Miami, United States, in January 2027 after emerging victorious in the national championship held in Nairobi.
The 21-year-old secured the national title after defeating Prorate 2-0 in the final held on Saturday, November 7, at Century Cinemax, Sarit Centre.
Kappa, who qualified through the Open League, will now compete against 79 other national champions at the global EA SPORTS FC 27 competition, which is expected to bring together 80 finalists from around the world.
The three-day global tournament will combine competitive gaming with real-life football challenges, with activities scheduled to take place at Inter Miami’s Nu Stadium.
Speaking after his victory, Kappa said he was determined to make the most of the opportunity and prepare thoroughly for the international contest.
“Winning the national final is a major milestone, but the bigger challenge lies ahead. Representing Kenya on the global stage is a responsibility I take seriously. I know I will be competing against some of the best players in the world, so I intend to use the time before the tournament to sharpen my skills, study different playing styles and prepare for the competition,” he said.
“My ambition is not just to participate, but to progress to the final stages and give Kenya something to celebrate,” he added.
The national competition brought together players from two qualifying pathways: the University League and the Open League.
The University League provided a platform for students from universities across the country to compete, while the Open League attracted esports enthusiasts from different parts of Kenya.
Participants progressed through home-and-away knockout matches, with aggregate scores determining who advanced to the next stage. The leading performers from both leagues eventually met in the national final to determine Kenya’s representative at the global championship.
In Miami, the 80 finalists will compete over three days, with the opening day dedicated to tournament activities. The second day will feature group-stage matches, qualifiers and real-life football challenges, before the competition concludes with the quarter-finals, semi-finals and grand final.
Red Bull athlete Patrick Odongo said the competition offers young gamers an opportunity to develop their skills and pursue ambitions beyond the local gaming scene.
“Competitions such as the Red Bull Wings Cup give young people an opportunity to test their abilities, compete at different levels and pursue their ambitions beyond the local scene. Kappa’s win is an important achievement, and we wish him all the best as he flies Kenya’s flag in Miami,” Odongo said.
He noted that competitive gaming was increasingly becoming part of the wider sports landscape, requiring discipline, preparation, strategy and the ability to perform under pressure.
Kenya’s esports scene has continued to develop through university competitions, online gaming communities and organised tournaments, creating opportunities beyond playing.
The growing industry is also opening up prospects in sports marketing, event management, broadcasting, digital content production, team management and gaming technology.
