As Nairobi’s political landscape slowly takes shape ahead of the 2027 General Election, one name continues to dominate conversations in party meetings, grassroots gatherings and City Hall corridors: George Aladwa.
The Makadara MP’s declaration that he will seek the Nairobi governorship has introduced a new political dynamic in the capital, one that many of his rivals cannot afford to ignore. It is not merely because Aladwa is a sitting Member of Parliament, but because he represents a rare blend of experience, grassroots influence and long-standing political networks that few leaders in Nairobi can match.
Aladwa’s political journey is deeply rooted in Nairobi’s history. Unlike many politicians who emerge suddenly through party waves or political appointments, Aladwa has risen through every level of city leadership. He first served as a councillor for Makongeni-Kaloleni Ward, gaining first-hand experience of the challenges facing ordinary residents in Eastlands and the wider city. His years at City Hall exposed him to issues of urban planning, revenue collection, housing, transport and service delivery long before the advent of county governments.
In 2011, Aladwa made history by becoming the last elected Mayor of Nairobi, a position that, in many ways, was the precursor to today’s office of governor. The mayor’s office then occupied a central role in city administration, requiring political negotiation, coalition-building and constant engagement with councillors from across Nairobi.
That experience gave him an understanding of City Hall that few contemporary politicians possess.
His transition to national politics only expanded his influence. Since 2017, Aladwa has served two consecutive terms as Makadara MP, successfully defending his seat in one of Nairobi’s politically competitive constituencies.
His electoral victories have reinforced his reputation as a politician with a dependable support base and a strong connection to grassroots voters.
Yet perhaps Aladwa’s greatest political strength lies in the networks he has built over more than three decades in public life. As ODM’s Nairobi County chairman, he has worked closely with party structures from the ward level to the county leadership. Over the years, he has cultivated relationships with current and former Members of County Assembly, community leaders, youth groups and grassroots mobilisers across the city.
These connections have made him one of Nairobi’s most effective political organisers.
Recent developments have further demonstrated this influence. More than 20 ODM MCAs recently endorsed Aladwa’s gubernatorial bid, describing him as a leader who understands both the party and the city’s political realities. Such endorsements are significant because MCAs often serve as the bridge between county leaders and voters at the grassroots.
Their support signals confidence in Aladwa’s ability to unite different political interests within Nairobi.
Aladwa has also long been regarded as one of the trusted political allies of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in Nairobi politics. Over the years, he has played a key role in mobilising support for ODM and defending the party’s interests in the capital. In a city where political loyalty and organisational strength matter, this trust has elevated his standing beyond Makadara and into the broader county arena.
For his opponents, therefore, Aladwa presents a formidable challenge. He combines the experience of a former councillor, the administrative exposure of a former mayor, the legislative experience of a two-term MP and the organisational machinery of a long-serving party chairman.
He understands Nairobi’s formal political structures as well as its informal networks.
The 2027 Nairobi governor race has already attracted several powerful contenders. But George Aladwa enters that contest with one major advantage: he is not building political networks from scratch; he is relying on relationships forged over decades.
That is why his gubernatorial bid is commanding attention across the political divide. For supporters, he represents continuity, experience and grassroots politics.
For opponents, he is a candidate whose deep roots in Nairobi politics make him impossible to underestimate.
