The Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) recently held its 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM), where President James Waindi and Secretary General Moses Wakhisi delivered reports highlighting the association’s progress and challenges, with a focus on its growing membership.

Despite the challenging media landscape, SJAK’s membership has continued to grow, with over 22 new fully paid-up members joining the association, bringing the total membership to nearly 250. President Waindi praised members for their dedication and commitment to the profession, urging them to remain resilient in the face of hardships, including job losses, pay cuts, and delayed salaries. “I urge our member scribes to remain resilient but also diversify into social media and other forms of media to survive these demanding times,” said Waindi.

Wajndi added: “The association has been working tirelessly to provide its members with opportunities for growth and development. SJAK organized several activities, including an inaugural medical wellness camp and skills empowerment workshops for golf, athletics, and chess to build capability.”

The association has also forged partnerships with key stakeholders, including Betika, LG Electronics EA, Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT), Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK), and Media Council of Kenya (MCK), to help members benefit from technical regulations and knowledge, Waindi added.

Empowering Members through International Coverage

Mr. Waindi also noted that SJAK sent members to cover key international events, “providing valuable experience and career growth opportunities courtesy of its partnership with the Ministry of Sports.”

Beneficiaries included Stafford Odego, Agness Makhandia, Gladys Midecha, Sila Kiplagat, and several others.

Future Plans

SJAK Secretary General Moses Wakhisi highlighted that the association remains committed to promoting sports journalism and providing members with opportunities for growth and development.

“With the support of its partners and members, SJAK is poised for continued success in the future,” quipped Wakhisi.

The AGM provided a platform for members to engage with the association’s leadership and stakeholders to discuss future plans and strategies.

The event was attended by over 80 scribes at Argyle Grand Hotel, with hundreds more joining virtually.

LG Electronics EA, longtime sponsors of the Association’s sports personality awards, also supported the AGM with two states-of-the -art microwaves won by members Joel Omoto and Steve Ayoo through a trivia.

Excel Chemicals also quenched the thirst of members with their famous
