Korogocho Ward MCA Absalom Matach Odhiambo has defended the appointment of Calvin Okoth, popularly known as Gaucho, to the board of Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital amid mounting public criticism.
Speaking as debate intensified online and among sections of the public, Matach dismissed claims that Gaucho is unfit for the position, terming the accusations as unfair and unfounded.
“Gaucho is not a goon as some Kenyans are alleging. He is a Kenyan like any other and deserves equal opportunity to serve,” Matach said.
He further questioned the basis of the criticism, citing past appointments of individuals with unclear academic backgrounds to senior government positions. Matach argued that Gaucho’s case should not be subjected to disproportionate scrutiny, emphasizing that he is capable and of sound mind to serve on the hospital’s board.
The MCA also used the opportunity to call for reforms in public healthcare, urging newly appointed board members to prioritize improved service delivery. He highlighted persistent challenges in public hospitals, including negligence, delays in treatment, lack of essential medicines, congestion, and inadequate equipment.
Matach expressed hope that the new appointments would mark a turning point in addressing these longstanding issues and improving the quality of care for patients.
