Millennials Cookout transformed Ngong Racecourse into a vibrant time capsule on Saturday, drawing thousands of attendees for its anniversary edition — a celebration that blended nostalgia, food, and music into an unforgettable shared experience.

Marking one year since its inception, the event felt less like a typical outing and more like a reunion of a generation. From the moment guests streamed in, the mood was unmistakable: throwback hits from the 90s and early 2000s, laughter echoing across picnic setups, and a collective sense of reliving the “good old days.”

The crowd fully embraced the athleisure dress code, turning the grounds into a runway of vintage sneakers, oversized tees, varsity jackets and tracksuits. The fashion became part of the storytelling — effortlessly merging nostalgia with modern street style as attendees lounged, danced, and reconnected.

At the heart of the experience was the bustling Food Village, where Nairobi’s top street food vendors delivered a feast of flavour. From slow-grilled meats and classic nyama choma to sizzling mutura and creative comfort dishes, the space became a social hub where strangers bonded over shared plates and conversations. The cookout not only fed the crowd but also spotlighted the city’s growing ecosystem of local food entrepreneurs.

Music carried the energy throughout the day, with DJs Rabar, Kronixx, Emvy, Kaneda, and BV delivering seamless throwback sets that kept the crowd engaged. Each track tapped into shared memories, turning the event into a living soundtrack of a generation.

Then came the highlight of the day.

In a surprise performance that electrified the crowd, Tanzanian Bongo Flava star took to the stage, sending fans into a frenzy as they sang along to his timeless hits. Moments later, South African house duo elevated the experience even further with soulful anthems that had the entire audience swaying in unison.

The night closed on a high note with Austrian DJ , whose energetic EDM set delivered a powerful finale to an already electric day.

Speaking at the event, co-founder Dickson Matata emphasized the deeper vision behind the cookout.

“Watching friends share meals, reconnect, and simply enjoy each other’s company — that’s exactly why we do this. These moments also create real opportunities for the vendors who’ve built something of their own. When our community eats well, they eat well too.”

As enters its second year, its mission remains clear: to fuse food, music, and culture into experiences that celebrate community while supporting local entrepreneurship.

For those in attendance, the anniversary edition was more than just an event — it was a cultural moment, a nostalgic escape, and a reminder of the power of shared experiences.
