The intrigues of the UK funded Railway City Project are now surfacing quick and first with fresh revelations now revealing that a Chinese run company was conned millions of shillings.

China Road and Bridge Corporation officials are believed to have parted with millions of shillings in bribe to Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Mainga, senior transport officials and other middle men in efforts to land the multi-billion tender deal.

As of March 2026, the tender for the construction of the Nairobi Railway City Central Station faced significant legal disputes, leading to the cancellation of an initial award.

The company had initially won the tender worth Sh30 billion tender to the China Road and Bridge Corporation but this was contested by The China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), which was the lowest bidder at approximately Sh23 billion.

The contesting company successfully challenged the award to CRBC and the Administrative Review Board (PPARB) went ahead to cancell the award , finding that the evaluation process was flawed.

The PPARB ordered a re-evaluation of the bids within 21 days.

Other Bidders were CRCEG-COVEC consortium which also participated in the bidding process.

British engineering firm Atkins Global was selected to design the new rail hub, while KPMG was engaged to lead the search for investors for the commercial segments, including office towers and residential units.
